Popular lawyer Deji Adeyanju has responded to the N1.1 billion defamation lawsuit filed by gospel singer Mercy Chinwo against social media critic Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

On March 5, 2025, it was revealed that Chinwo, through her lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi, initiated legal proceedings against VDM over alleged defamatory statements made on Instagram in February. Thelawsuit seeks N1 billion in general damages, N100 million in punitive damages, and N25 million in legal fees. It also demands that VDM delete the alleged posts and issue a public apology on his social media platforms and in two major newspapers.

Reacting to the legal action, Adeyanju took to X (formerly Twitter) to mock the lawsuit, suggesting that VDM lacks the financial means to pay such an amount. “I heard somebody sued VDM for N1.1 billion, and I laughed so hard. What I know is that VDM does not have N100k anywhere in the world to give anyone. People just be wasting their time for nothing,” he wrote. The case has since sparked widespread debate online, with many questioning the implications of defamation lawsuits against online commentators.
