108 and Still Shaping Lives: The Untold Story of the World's Oldest Female Barber

Meet Shitsui Hakoishi, 108 Guinness World Records' Oldest Female Barber

Shitsui Hakoishi, a 108-year-old Japanese woman, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest female barber. Born on November 10, 1916, Hakoishi has spent over 90 years cutting hair and continues to work at her salon in Nakagawa, Tochigi prefecture.

Hakoishi's journey as a barber began at the age of 14, when she moved to Tokyo alone and started working as an apprentice barber. She earned her barber's license in 1936 and opened her own salon with her husband, Jiro, three years later.

Despite facing hardships, including the loss of her salon and husband during World War II, Hakoishi remains determined to continue working. She admits that knee pain limits her ability to cut hair frequently, but she continues to serve a small number of regular clients each month.

"I'm truly happy," Hakoishi said. "Some people travel from far away to see me, so I want to keep going for as long as I can."

Hakoishi's achievement is a testament to her dedication and passion for her craft. She joins the ranks of other remarkable individuals, including Tomoko Horino, who was recognized as the world's oldest female beauty advisor at the age of 100 in 2023.
