Sudan's Hunger Crisis Worsens: USAID Funding Pause Cripples Community Kitchens

The United States' decision to suspend foreign aid has pushed Sudan to the brink of catastrophe, with millions facing malnutrition-related illnesses and death. The pause in USAID funding has forced the closure of approximately 80% of the 1,460 community kitchens across Sudan, exacerbating the hunger crisis.

Since assuming office, US President Donald Trump's administration has put on leave or fired the vast majority of employees at USAID and paused almost all global projects. This move has crippled the humanitarian response in Sudan, where USAID contributed 44% to the $1.8 billion humanitarian response last year [1).

The closure of community kitchens has devastating consequences for vulnerable populations, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and host communities. These kitchens provided essential nutrition, and their closure increases the risk of malnutrition, starvation, and related health complications.

The international community must take immediate action to address the deepening hunger crisis in Sudan. This includes:

  • Restoring USAID funding: To support the reopening of community kitchens and the delivery of essential aid.
  • Increasing humanitarian support: To provide relief workers with the necessary resources to respond to the crisis.
  • Promoting sustainable solutions: To support long-term food security and resilience in Sudan.

The people of Sudan cannot afford to wait. The international community must act now to prevent a catastrophic humanitarian disaster.
